English

GT Online English enables students to develop an understanding of the power of stories to shape their engagement with the world.

Students are given the opportunity to extend their understanding of language and literature through the study of a diverse range of texts and the application of sophisticated concepts. Students are exposed to a variety of classic and contemporary texts from different cultures. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, analytical and creative skills, as well as shaping language for effect. Participation in the course enables students to become self-motivated learners who work effectively both collaboratively and independently.

The English curriculum is organised into three interrelated strands that support students' growing understanding and use of Standard Australian English. Together the three strands focus on developing students' knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing. The three strands are:

  • Language: knowing about the English language
  • Literature: understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature
  • Literacy: expanding the repertoire of English usage.
