Australian History Competition

Congratulations to our students who achieved outstanding results in this year’s Australian History Competition. A total of 43 Year 7–10 HASS students participated in the competition during our May camp. This competition allows students to showcase their historical skills while promoting the importance of History and providing opportunities to excel. We are proud to celebrate their excellent achievements.

56 GT Online Science students participated in the Big Science Competition in May this year. The competition tests science knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with questions that are set in real-life, contemporary contexts.

The Australian Geography Competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills and has been running since 1995. In 2026, the competition was held online, consisting of mainly multiple-choice questions designed to test geographical knowledge and skills.

Congratulations to GT Online students Adelle Hoddy (WA College of Agriculture), Josiah Simmons (Hedland SHS), and Maya Gallegos (Collie SHS), who have been selected for the 2026 Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour.

In the first stage of the competition, students wrote an essay examining the actions of a Western Australian individual or a specific group within the Australian Defence Force, explaining how their service helped protect Australians and why it is important to continue commemorating their contribution. After being named finalists, the students attended interviews during the October school holidays, after which ten students were selected for the tour.

Last Thursday (5 March), GT Online Coordinator Jo Dobb and HASS Coordinator Sue Thomson attended the official presentation ceremony at the Australian War Widows (WA) Inc. Centre in Menora, where Adelle, Josiah, and Maya received their certificates from Hon. Paul Papalia, Minister for Defence Industries and Veterans, and Department of Education Director General Jay Peckitt.

The 2026 Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour will see ten Western Australian students travel to Darwin and Singapore from 10–18 April. The tour commemorates the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II, as well as the 84th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin and the fall of Singapore.

We are extremely proud of Adelle, Josiah, and Maya, and acknowledge the outstanding guidance and support provided by their dedicated GT Online HASS teacher, Sue Thomson.

Australian History Competition

The Australian History Competition is run by the Australian History Teachers’ Association and is based on the Australian History Curriculum. The competition comprises 50 multiple choice questions, graded from easy to hard, to be answered in 45 minutes. The questions address knowledge, skills and understandings in History. Around 40,000 students undertake the competition each year.

51 GT Online Science students participated in the Big Science Competition in May this year. The competition tests science knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with questions that are set in real-life, contemporary contexts.

Congratulations to GT Online students Lily Moses (Champion Bay SHS), Ella Tennant and Dylan McKenzie (both Kalbarri DHS) who have been selected for the Premier’s Anzac Student Tour for 2025. For the initial part of the competition, the students wrote an essay on why memorials are important in remembering our Anzacs. Ella wrote about the HMAS Sydney II Memorial in Geraldton, Dylan researched and wrote about the 22^nd Commando Squadron which was led by his Great, Great Uncle while Lily investigated the Sandakan Memorial which stands in Boyup Brook. Having been announced as finalists,  they attended an interview during the October holidays after which the 10 students who make up the tour group were selected. The students represent schools across the state, including from Broome, Kalbarri, Geraldton, Perth, and Norseman. They will travel to Japan from 17 to 27 April 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. While in Japan, they will also have the opportunity to reflect on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and recognise the significant acts of reconciliation that have occurred between our nations since this time. The tour group were recently presented with certificates acknowledging their selection by the Director General at a ceremony in Anzac House in Perth.

We are very proud of Lily, Ella and Dylan and recognise the incredible guidance and support provided by their dedicated GT Online HASS teacher Sue Thomson.

Congratulations to GT Online student Lilly Moses who was a WA Runner Up of The Simpson Prize.

The Simpson Prize is an essay writing competition for Year 9 and 10 students that focuses on Australian military service in World War One. Lilly’s entry for the 2024 Prize focused on the different historical interpretations around the nature and significance of the ANZAC legend. Lilly spent considerable time researching this topic and wrote a very poignant entry arguing that despite many challenges, the ANZAC legend and commemoration of Anzac Day, still has widespread support across Australia.

Lilly’s consistent argument that the ANZAC legend is an integral part of Australian Identity and that there will always be a place for the commemoration of ANZAC Day was awarded as runner up for the 2024 Simpson Prize and as such Lilly participated in a study tour in Canberra travelling to key historical and commemorative sites. We are so proud of Lilly’s achievement in this prestigious competition and encourage other students to take on the challenge of writing an entry for Simpson Prize 2025.
